Notifying DSM
To ensure smooth operations, media representatives should notify the DSM Communications Manager via email or phone before arriving at the airport.
News media have unescorted access to all non-secure areas, including the terminal lobby and hallways before security screening checkpoints, as well as DSM parking lots, garages and any other outdoor public space. Media must not obstruct public access to TSA, ticket counters, gates, baggage claim, or other terminal areas.
Areas leased by airlines and other tenants such as ticket counters, private offices, stores and restaurants, are controlled by those specific businesses, and media access to these spaces requires prior approval from the respective tenant.
Agencies at the Airport
Many agencies operate within DSM, each handling specific responsibilities. Media should direct inquiries to the appropriate agency:
- Aircraft Operations/Air Traffic Control: Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) - Contact the FAA Public Affairs for information. They can be reached at pressoffice@faa.gov.
- Airline-Specific Matters: Issues such as flight schedules, baggage concerns, and labor matters should be directed to the individual airline public affairs teams, listed below.
- Airport Security: The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) oversees airport security. For details, contact TSA Pubic Affairs at tsamedia@tsa.dhs.gov.
Weather and Flight Delays
Airlines, FAA air traffic controllers, and pilots determine flight delays, cancellations, and rerouting. Adverse weather conditions may impact airport operations, but DSM remains open during most weather events, with occasional temporary runway closures for snow and ice removal.
For details on how a delay or cancellation affects passengers, please contact the respective airline directly.
Airport Emergencies
DSM's top priority is maintaining safe and orderly airport operations.
For real-time updates on events, media representatives are encouraged to follow DSM on X (formerly Twitter) at @DSMAirport, where timely information will be shared.
Additionally, details about media briefings will be communicated via email and social media as needed.
