DSM Reflects on a Defining Year of Growth, Records Set and Transformation in 2025
January 13, 2026
Des Moines International Airport (DSM) marked 2025 as one of the most significant years in its history, highlighted by record connectivity, major infrastructure milestones, and continued progress on the airport’s new terminal, all while maintaining safe, reliable operations for millions of travelers.
DSM closed 2025 with 3,254,107 passengers, representing a 2.4 percent increase over 2024 and establishing a new all-time passenger record for the airport. The milestone marks the third consecutive year DSM has surpassed 3 million passengers, underscoring sustained demand for air travel in Central Iowa.
“2025 demonstrated what’s possible when strategic investment, strong partnerships, and an exceptional team come together,” said Brian Mulcahy, CEO of the Des Moines Airport Authority. “Our growth reflects steady, sustainable demand, not a single spike, which positions DSM well for the future. Throughout the year, we continued to grow responsibly, enhance the customer experience, and invest in infrastructure that will serve Central Iowa for decades to come.”
The record-setting year was achieved despite significant weather-related flight cancellations in November and December, which impacted operations nationwide and tempered late-year growth.
Record Air Service and Connectivity
In 2025, DSM added six new routes, reaching a record 35 nonstop destinations, a level of connectivity comparable to Midwest airports twice its size. The airport also supported international operations with the successful launch of an Aer Lingus charter flight to Dublin, transporting Iowa State team members for the Cyclones’ game overseas.
Major Infrastructure Investments
As part of the LiftDSM program, DSM opened its new parking garage in July, increasing garage capacity by 63 percent and significantly improving convenience for travelers. The airport also launched EZ Pickup, a new curbside program that has successfully reduced congestion at the terminal front curb.
Construction continued throughout the year on DSM’s new terminal, a complex project that required the airport to operate at full capacity while the building was being constructed. The project remains on track for a January 2027 opening.
To support winter operations, DSM completed four new deice pads ahead of the season, enhancing efficiency and operational resilience during cold and severe weather.
Brand Evolution and Leadership Transition
In May, DSM unveiled a new logo, brand, website, and visual identity, aligning the airport’s look and voice with its future-focused vision and ongoing transformation.
The airport also navigated a leadership transition, thanking its outgoing CEO for years of service and welcoming new leadership during a pivotal period of growth.
Prepared for Challenges
DSM’s team responded professionally to a number of operational challenges in 2025, including severe weather events in November and December. The airport also maintained reliable operations during the longest federal government shutdown, with minimal impact to travelers.
“None of this progress happens without the dedication of our employees, the trust of our airline partners, and the support of our community,” Mulcahy said. “2025 has set the foundation for what’s ahead at DSM.”
